“Hey, man, how are Cecilia and the kids?” I ask my friend and retired army soldier, Thomas Landon.

“Colby, it’s been a while. Cecilia and the kids are good, thanks for asking. I heard you were home on medical leave. How are you doing?”

It’s the thing that I like best about Thomas, he gives a fuck about people. He’s someone I look up to. He's a hell of a soldier and one of the best men I know.

“It’s fine, I’ll be back on missions in no time,” I assure him. Even though I hate being away from my teammates, I can’t help but feel guilty that they’re no longer my first priority.

When we’ll be on missions, I’ll always have their backs, but Kayla comes first. Always.

He chuckles, “How did I know you were going to say that? So what’s up?”

I sigh, the man is too astute. “I was in Vegas and I met this woman…”

His chuckles get louder, “Let me guess, you’ve been hit with the bug. You’re so gone you can’t even think straight.”

“Hardy-ha, fucker.” I gripe without heat. “But yes, Kayla’s fucking amazing. She’s also Kash’s sister. I didn’t know until after we got married…”

“Whoa, what the fuck? You got married and you just casually slip that into the conversation as though it’s nothing? Bro, what the hell?”

Shit. If this is how he’s reacting, I’m fucking dreading Kash’s reaction.

“We were drunk but now it’s real. I fucking love her man and I actually need your help.”

“Whatever you need,” he replies instantly.

“It’s her ex, he’s been harassing her. He doesn’t like the fact that he’s an ex and she’s moved on. He’s sending her gifts and letters. In the past three weeks, he’s sent at least fifteen letters and gifts.”

“Fuck,” Thomas snarls.

“Yeah, now I met that fucker two weeks ago and warned him that if he didn’t stop harassing Kayla we’d have a problem. He didn’t listen and now he’s in the wind.”

The fuck of it is, I feel useless, I’m in the military, I’ve been to the most war-torn countries in the world. I’ve seen the worst of the worst and I’ve always kept my cool. But this is different, this is my wife. The woman that I love more than life itself and I can’t help her as I have no idea where this fucker is.

“I’ll swing by tomorrow, I’ll bring my brother Carlton too. Don’t worry, Colby, we’ll sort this out.”

“Thanks, Thomas. I owe you.”

“No, this is what we do. I’ll see you tomorrow,” he assures me and ends the call.

I feel slightly better knowing that I have back-up if shit goes south.

Before I even throw my cell down onto the sofa and tune back into the sports channel, my cell rings. Glancing at the screen, I see a number I don’t recognize.

“Colby,” I answer tersely.

“Maddox?” The feminine voice has me sitting up straight. “It’s Evie, I’m not sure if you remember me…”

“I remember you,” I grunt, my gut screaming at me that somethings wrong.

“It’s Kayla…” The fear in her voice has me already moving.
